History of Leon d'Oro

The Hotel Ristorante Leon d'Oro is the oldest hotel in Orta San Giulio still in activity. Since 1815, it has been run by the same family of hoteliers, generation after generation.

The family also has a peculiar history in the social and economic vicissitudes of the village, the only one still present and resident in Orta since the Middle Ages.

Retracing its history means discovering the birth and development of tourism of the Riviera of Orta, from a simple destination or stopover for religious pilgrimages to a place of commercial frequentation, up to the development at the end of the 18th century with the so-called Gran Tour, and fully throughout the 19th century, in the variants of the picturesque romantic journey, closely related to the Victorian English world, but also to the French and German worlds, in the context of the Lake Region. Tourists travelled to these areas for explorations both of a purely geographical but also anthropological nature, with the twin visit of the vast Alpine area.

Many illustrious personalities have chosen Orta San Giulio for a stay, including the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who stayed at the Leon d'Oro in May 1882 in our room 102 overlooking the lake.
Our family and the entire staff hope that this history, written together with people from all walks of life, will continue with their grandchildren and their grandchildren's children.

For many years, the two sisters, Maddalena and Giuseppina Ronchetti ran the business. Today, still at the helm of the Leon d'Oro is our Marilena Ronchetti, with her children Cesare, Cristina and nephew Gianmario.
